Overview:
This narrative skills learning pack is aimed at Key Stage 1 and has been used successfully with Reception, year 1 and year 2 children, as well as being adapted to Key Stage 2.
Problem:
The pack provides teaching tools and resources, for use by both teachers and speech and language therapists in primary education, to help children develop narrative skills i.e. the ability to tell a story.
Solution:
The programme follows the development of narrative skills in children from raising awareness of the individual components of a simple story, to retelling and then generating their own ideas for stories. The narrative framework can be applied to many class activities to assist story planning, story comprehension, retelling of events and explanations in both verbal and written work. This material is based on a 2 year project run in six Stockport mainstream primary schools by Becky Shanks, Speech & Language Therapist, Stockport Primary Care NHS Trust.
