Overview:
This training resource was developed by Linda Boyles, Pennine Care NHS Trust. The pack is aimed at all arts, mental health or educational organisations which want to develop an arts and mental health training programme for artists, mental health workers or service users with relevant arts experience. It is intended for use by a programme co-ordinator in charge of planning and administration, and a programme trainer and lead artists conducting the training programme.
Problem:
The benefit of the arts in all areas of health, including the mental health sector, is gaining increasing recognition. Although increasing numbers of people are interested in working in this area, many organisations which seek workers who can offer this kind of training and experience find there is a limited pool of people to draw on. This programme seeks to rectify that imbalance.
Solution:
The pack offers organisations the opportunity to train learners in the skills needed to facilitate arts and mental health group work. It works by showing how to teach learners the relevant theories and issues then how to allocate them to arts and mental health placement groups where they are able to put the theories into practice. As a result of this, the programme also gives service users within the participating placement groups the opportunity to develop their skills in a range of art forms.
Technical Information:
The pack provides most of the resources an organisation needs to facilitate its own training programme, including handouts and OHP slides. It leads the co-ordinator through the administration of the programme, programme materials and assessment procedures for accreditation and provides a step-by-step guide for facilitators to run the training.
It is possible to accredit the training through Open College Network (OCN) so that learners can gain OCN credits in facilitating arts and mental health work. The programme places great emphasis on accrediting practical arts experience, and does not require extensive written work.
Format: Ring-bound resource (approx 300pp).
