Encopresis - bowel training - toilet refusal Training Pack
[Law-045-05]

Overview

Encopresis is a condition where children repeatedly pass faeces in inappropriate places, whether voluntary or intentional.

The pack is designed to be helpful for front line staff working with children with learning disabilities who have Encopresis, toilet refusal or the need for bowel training. The pack can also be a useful resource for carers or parents.

The reason for developing this pack was to bring together information and resources from 3 sources:

1. what is known about encopresis and constipation for normally developing children,

2. communication with children with learning disability and

3. communication with parents.

The Solution

Dr Chris Lawes, Head of Psychology at North East Essex PCT Learning Disabilities Services has produced a ground-breaking interactive training pack, including CD, for front-line staff working with children and their families.

The philosophy upon which this pack is based is that of the Family Partnership Model developed by Hilton Davis and the pack is designed to be used after completing a five day training course.

A steering group was formed to design the pack, followed by a trial with seven School Health Advisors over a period of five days. Focus groups were held at the end of the training with a second session after a term's use of the manual. Qualitative analysis was also undertaken, to enable full evaluation and to identify changes to enhance the efficacy of the training programme.

The pack was designed around a study by Davies et al (2002), which defines a model of the helping process, including core underpinning factors: working together, power sharing, complementary expertise, mutual respect, open communication and negotiation.

Resources in the pack included the identification of the major symptoms of encopresis and a Stool Form Scale.
